Athough it is commonly accepted that electronic patient journals (EPJ) will bring great benefits to hospitals and patients and contribute significantly to avoiding treatment errors, the path to EPJ is not easy. By their very nature, clinical treatment processes are much more complicated than most of the business processes that have successfully been digitalized up until now.

Ph.D. aims to find better ways to the goal
The IT University of Copenhagen has established a three-year Ph.D. position for Karen Marie Lyng, who will be investigating what is required for an IT system to effectively support clinical processes in the health sector. The idea is to transfer proven business process management methods to the demands made by hospitals.

Cooperation between the public and private sectors creates synergy
Karen Marie Lyng's background combines medícine and business, making her highly qualified for the task. A surgeon, she has also worked as a sales consultant for clinical IT systems at TietoEnator. Starting February 1st, 2007, she will be working to identify the requirements that need to be fulfilled by a successful EPJ system.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with Associate Professor Finn Kensing at the IT University as well as various existing Danish initiatives regarding electronic patient journal systems, of which the best known is that of the Greater Copenhagen Area. Karen Marie Lyng's research is being partly financed by Resultmaker A/S.
