The agencies use their own IT systems, which are integrated with the Road Safety and Transport Agency's systems via web services. The fully digitized system allows for huge savings by removing the need for paper forms and manual tasks.

Permits from Virk.dk are stored directly in the Road Safety and Transport Agency's systems, while the individual vehicle inspection companies transmit their results to the central agency system each time an inspection is completed. Both transmissions make use of web services. Permits are dispatched to the Central Registry for Motor Vehicles (CRM), and all relevant vehicle data are made available to the vehicle inspection companies. The entire process is automatic. Integration across multiple companies and state organizations gives the Road Safety and Transport Agency and all other involved groups great administrative savings, as well as allowing faster case handling.

According to an analysis conducted by KPMG, the new solution for the Road Safety and Transport Agency cost less than half of a traditional IT solution, both in development and in maintenance, due to economies of scale on Virk.dk. The report indicated savings of up to DKK 850,000 on the new system and up DKK 200,000 on yearly running costs – a saving of 50% compared to more traditional solutions.

OIOXML and SOAare not just buzzwords!
Resultmaker developed the electronic inspection solution in under three months. This was possible due to the use of service oriented architecture (SOA) and the Danish Ministry of Science and Technology’s OIOXML standard – both in back office systems and in the reporting solution itself.

At Resultmaker, one of Denmark’s leading developers of XML-based technology, with over five years of experience in both OIOXML and SOA, the positive numbers are no surprise. According to Resultmaker's head of Sales and Marketing Christian Drejøe, ”We again have concrete proof of what Resultmaker has said time and time again: government organisations stand to make massive savings by building IT solutions based on SOA and XML standards. Not only in development, maintenance and support, but also because systems come online faster and have a higher level of technical quality and harmonized user interfaces. Systems can integrate more easily with each other, as well as with back end systems. Systems developed in this way are reliable and long term solutions.”
