Vendors of heavy vehicles can now enjoy the same just-in-time vehicle type approval process as vendors of passenger cars and vans have enjoyed for a year.
The Danish Road Safety and Transport Agency on Feb 8, 2008 announced that national type approval notifications for busses, trucks, trailers, and semitrailers can now be processed in minutes instead of weeks. At the same time, data requirements have been reduced by 35-40 % compared to the previous manual approval process without reducing traffic safety.

Chief of the type approvals department, Knud Kristensen, and engineer, Martin Larsen, at the agency states:

"By an elimination of the time spent to process approvals, the new system brought a huge administrative relief to the entire industry. Besides that, the work processes have been optimized within the industry as a whole, as well as within The Danish Road Safety and Transport Agency.
During the design and development of the new system, we experienced the tight collaboration with Resultmaker to be both outstanding and profitable. The iterative design and development approach was particular successful, since it had a positive impact on the overall time consumption."

The system consists of both a server-based approval processing engine with automatic journaling of all documents and a forms-based application entering module on the VIRK.DK portal. That portal provides application forms for all vehicle categories supported by the just-in-time system. Users can easily modify previous applications for reprints of existing approvals. They can also create new applications similar to existing approvals by reusing previously entered applications. Typical approval processing time from applicants digital signing of a notification until the actual approval is in her hands, is 5-10 minutes.
The approval processing engine uses the Resultmaker Document Broker as its core. The portal runs on the Resultmaker OnlineConsultant product.
The solution exploits a service-oriented architecture where the application API can be used by 3rd party vendors to integrate approval processing into their solutions. The Danish Car Importers Association (DBI) therefore released an extended version of their system to integrate the notification process for busses and trucks.
Citizens and business can search the issued approvals using the agency's home page only hours after it was issued. All-in-all, type approval of vehicles is now a just-in-time process.
